Landscape design-buildmarketing for theSan Gabriel Valley

In most markets the thing standing between you and a six-figure project is price or timing. Here, often enough to matter, it is which language the estimator speaks and which language the proposal is written in. Almost every firm in the valley advertises in one. Part of our wider landscape design-build marketing practice.

The problem with this cluster

The money is here.
The English isn't always.

The San Gabriel Valley has home values to rival anywhere in this practice and a share of households speaking another language at home that nothing else in it comes close to. Those two facts sit on top of each other, and the design-build field advertises as though only the first one exists.

Language other than English spoken at home

  • Arcadia61.1%

    On a $1,441,800 median owner-occupied home value.

  • Pasadena41.9%

Across 57,425 households — the cluster's largest city.

  • Santa Clarita, for comparison36.2%

A market we cover on its own page, at a fraction of the value.

What this figure is not. It measures the language spoken at home, not English proficiency. The large majority of these households are comfortably bilingual and will happily read your English website. The commercial question is narrower and different: when someone is about to spend six figures on their own home, which language would they rather ask their awkward questions in?

Source: U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts, American Community Survey 2020–2024 five-year estimates, accessed August 2026. Language and foreign-born figures are percentages of persons, not of households. This page uses no race or ancestry data; the argument is about the language a customer would rather do business in, which is a service question.

Arcadia: 1.32× Pasadena's home value on 1.08× the income The valley's highest-value city is also its most linguistically distinct, and that is not a coincidence you can afford to ignore. Between them these two cities hold 35,577 owner-occupied households — 24,406 in Pasadena and 11,171 in Arcadia — and roughly 47% of them speak another language at home.

Nobody is failing to sell here because homeowners cannot read English. They are failing because a design-build project is a long, intimate, expensive conversation about someone's own house, conducted mostly in uncertainty, and people conduct that kind of conversation in whichever language they think fastest in.

A firm that can hold that conversation properly is not competing with the rest of the valley. It is in a different bracket entirely — and the question is simply whether the numbers justify building it.

Does a second language
pay for itself?

A bilingual estimator, translated proposals and a second campaign cost real money. This works out how many projects a year that has to produce before it washes its face, and whether the market is big enough to get you there.

Your territory

The first two fields are pre-filled with the real Census figures for Pasadena and Arcadia combined. Nothing is stored or sent.

Household-weighted blend of Arcadia and Pasadena. The Census figure counts people, not households, so applying it this way is an approximation.

Your judgement, not a Census figure — most of these households are bilingual. If you have no feel for it yet, that is the first thing worth finding out.
What you already achieve in your English-language market is the honest starting point.
Bilingual estimator time, translated site and proposal templates, a separate campaign, and someone to answer the phone.

Roughly 5,852 owner households in your territory would rather do this in another language. At your own conversion rate that is about 4.7 projects a year, against a break-even of 3. The investment clears by 2.0× and leaves $84,018 in year one — before the referral effect, which in a market this tightly networked is the part that actually compounds.

Referral behaviour is deliberately left out. It is the largest upside here and the hardest to forecast honestly, so the number above is the conservative floor. For what an enquiry should cost against this project value, use the max cost per lead calculator or read what design-build leads cost.

The account

Four things we do
differently here

01

Translate the proposal, not just the homepage

A translated landing page with an English-only estimator, English-only contract and English-only site foreman is worse than not bothering. It gets the enquiry and then loses it at the point where trust is actually built.

The order matters: the person first, then the documents they sign, then the ads. Do it the other way round and you have bought traffic you cannot serve — and the intake flow has to ask about language the same way it asks about budget, which is the argument in qualifying design-build leads.

02

Advertise where the research happens

Buyers in this valley do not all begin on Google. A meaningful share of the research, recommendation and vetting happens on platforms and in group chats that never appear in your analytics, which is why the field looks less competitive than it is.

Which platforms matter is local knowledge, and it varies street by street. The account starts by asking your existing customers where they actually looked.

03

Separate Pasadena from the rest

Pasadena has 57,425 households at 42.5% ownership; Arcadia has 19,227 at 58.1% and a median home value a third higher again. That is 24,406 owner households against 11,171 — different volumes, different tickets, different competitive fields.

Pasadena is also where nearly every SGV firm already advertises, which makes the rest of the valley the cheaper ground almost by default.

04

Answer in the language the call came in

The moment a caller has to switch languages, or hangs up and tries the next firm, the whole investment above is wasted. Reception is where in-language service either exists or does not.

AI voice handles this without a second full-time hire, and the missed call calculator prices what those calls are worth — the answer is larger here, because a caller who cannot be served simply calls someone who can.

The competitive field

One language, everybody

The SGV design-build field is strong, well-photographed and, as far as its advertising goes, monolingual almost without exception. In a valley where nearly half of households speak another language at home and home values run past $1.4 million, that is the largest unworked seam in this entire practice.

Before we quote anything we pull the live field and the real click prices at your terms. A day's work, free with the strategy call. The marketing scorecard takes twelve questions and no email address.

Build note — competitor teardown slot. Screenshots from Meta Ad Library and the Google Ads Transparency Center. Count how many advertisers run any non-English creative at all. Expect the answer to be zero or close to it — and if so, that screenshot grid is the strongest single asset on this page.

Build note — geo CPC slot. Keyword Planner range for the cluster, and then a separate pull for non-English search terms. That second pull is the one that matters: volume will be lower, competition far lower, and the cost per click should reflect it. Do not merge the two ranges into one figure.

Common questions

Answers for
SGV firms

Everyone here speaks English. Isn't this overthinking it?

Mostly yes, and that is not the point. Reading a website and negotiating a six-figure contract about your own home are different acts requiring different comfort. Plenty of people who work all day in English would still rather ask a builder the difficult questions in their first language.

Which is why the calculator asks you to estimate the preference share rather than reading it off the Census. Set it at 10% and see whether the case still holds; on the default numbers it does not, and that is a useful answer too.

Can we start with translated ads and add the people later?

We would advise against it. Translated ads that lead to a service you cannot deliver produce a bad first meeting, and in a market where referral travels this efficiently a bad first meeting is expensive well beyond the one job.

Hire or contract the estimator first, get the proposal templates right, then buy traffic. It is slower and it is the order that works.

Do you cover San Marino, Alhambra, Temple City and the rest?

Yes — along with South Pasadena, San Gabriel, Monterey Park, Rosemead, Sierra Madre, La Cañada Flintridge, Glendora, Walnut and Diamond Bar. Pasadena and Arcadia carry the data because they are the largest and the highest-value, and because between them they show the pattern clearly. San Marino in particular is small, extremely high-value and worth its own creative rather than being folded into a Pasadena campaign.

We will run the break-even on your real numbers, pull the live advertiser field to show you how much of it is monolingual, and map what serving this market properly would actually involve. If the numbers do not work, we will tell you that too.
